KMC councillor arrested on corruption charges, crowd pelts eggs during police escort

The police crackdown on alleged corruption and illegal construction within the Kolkata Municipal Corporation intensified late Friday night with the arrest of Ward No. 104 councillor and former Borough-11 Chairman Tarkeshwar Chakraborty. He was arrested by the Survey Park Police on charges including fraud, criminal conspiracy, tampering with official documents, illegal construction and alleged violations of the West Bengal Inland Fisheries Act. According to police sources, investigators gathered evidence before taking him into custody and are examining allegations of illegal encroachment on water bodies, extortion and the accumulation of disproportionate assets.

Following news of the arrest, a large number of people gathered outside the Survey Park Police Station. When police escorted the councillor from the premises, sections of the crowd shouted slogans and hurled eggs at him. The situation briefly turned tense before police secured the area and escorted the accused away under heavy security. Law enforcement personnel maintained order while preventing any further escalation outside the police station.

Police are continuing their investigation into the alleged financial and administrative irregularities linked to the accused councillor. Officials are examining documents and financial records to determine the source of the alleged assets and the extent of the alleged illegal activities. The arrest adds to a series of actions taken against several Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillors in connection with separate corruption investigations, while investigators continue efforts to identify others allegedly linked to the cases.
